Follow my Dream?
from Dreams Deferred
Question: Hi there, I am a therapist, and a full time mum to a two year old. I am also in the process of setting up a woman's creative communication network, a dream I have had since i was 16.
it is simply not drawing interest, even though my set up is professional and ready. I am also struggling to get my own personal life in gear again-and i feel that it is just within reach, somewhere deep within me. Its really frustrating. How do I untap that soul point of potential that I know i have?
Answer: Dear dreams,
Bravo to you for holding on to your vision…and seeking to manifest your dreams! Although you have not given me a great deal of information here, I can tell that you are passionate about your idea for a woman's creative network, and yet struggle with juggling a profession and a busy family life.
I think the most important things I would offer to you at this juncture are these: 1. Make sure you are connecting with other women/men who have set up these kinds of networking vehicles -- offer to help out with someone else's project so you can learn the ropes. There are so many social networking sites and events these days it is difficult to break through all the noise. The key is to learn from others, to be a partner with those whose dream may be further along and learn what works. 2. Get your own house in order. Be sure to focus on grounding your family situation and primary profession (your therapy practice?) before you jump with both feet into something new.
Finally, I always recommend that my clients who wish to create a "portfolio" life--made up of multiple ventures and projects--seek out synergies that exist between them. For example, perhaps one or more of your clients might be interested in supporting your woman's network venture? In today's high tech, high touch world, it is extremely difficult to manage multiple projects all by oneself. The key is to find significant partners to work with--particularly those whose skills and availability and interests dovetail with yours.
Finally, be patient. Big dreams take time to gestate and manifest. Persevere, collaborate with others, and don't be dismayed if things start small. Remember, for example, there was once a tiny little online auction outfit…where a few people started buying and selling things on the internet, just a few short years ago. Today, we all know this "little" venture as EBAY, one of the most successful companies of all time…so don't give up on your dreams. You never know!
All best,
Dr J
